About Me

Hi! I’m Alicia Mattera, mom, wife, friend, educator, entrepreneur, book lover, and kitchen enthusiast with a passion for learning and sharing.

Until recently, I taught high school as a Family & Consumer Sciences teacher, where I helped young parents build real-world skills through classes on cooking, baking, parenting, entrepreneurship, and wellness. Education is my passion, especially when it blends practical life tools with creativity, community, and confidence-building.

Before stepping into the classroom, I spent over 20 years as an entrepreneur, including 13 years as a doula, supporting families through some of life’s most beautiful (and chaotic!) seasons. I hold a Bachelor’s in Education (FCS) and a Master’s in Organizational Leadership, both from the University of Idaho. I also hold many certifications in parenting education, doula, and lactation support.

I believe books and cooking have a lot in common. They tell stories, connect people, and invite us to learn. That’s why I created Cooks & Books: a space where food meets learning, and learning becomes fun. Part cooking class, part community gathering, part celebration of knowledge and nourishment.

In the Bookshop at Cooks & Books, I hand-select every title, from unique cookbooks and women’s health reads to thrillers, romance, and stories for kids and teens. I aim to offer a carefully curated collection that inspires, entertains, and nurtures both your mind and your kitchen.

In the Cooking Studio at Cooks & Books, I’m excited to be your instructor as we dive into a variety of cooking techniques from perfecting savory dishes to mastering sweet treats. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced home chef, I’ll guide you through each step, making the process fun, approachable, and delicious. Together, we’ll explore new flavors, create memorable meals, and build skills you can use in your kitchen.

I’ve been gluten-free for over three years and love experimenting and creating recipes that are just as delicious as the originals. I’m excited to share that passion through upcoming gluten-free cooking and baking classes designed to inspire and empower others on their gluten-free journey.
