Teens: Intro to Basics

Course Overview: It is highly recommended that each student between the ages of 13-18 take this class before enrolling in others. This will better prepare them for future classes.

This foundational class will cover the essential skills every aspiring cook needs to be successful in the kitchen. From knife skills to basic cooking techniques, students will learn to work safely, efficiently, and confidently. By the end of the class, teens will be able to demonstrate proficiency in basic cooking methods, knife skills, and kitchen safety.

Students will need to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

  1. Knife Skills: Proper grip and technique, ability to chop, dice, mince, and chiffonade with safety and accuracy.

  2. Cooking Techniques: Ability to sauté, boil, bake, and stir-fry with an understanding of timing and heat control.

  3. Measuring and Mixing: Correct measurement of ingredients and following basic mixing techniques (stirring, folding).

  4. Safety and Organization: Awareness of kitchen safety, sanitizing, and proper knife handling.

  5. Plating: The ability to present food neatly, with a clean plate and attention to portion sizes.

Post-Class Follow-Up:

Upon completion, students will be given a certificate of completion to confirm that they’ve mastered the basics. Students who demonstrate confidence and competence will feel confident to proceed to more advanced cooking classes!

This class serves as an essential introduction to cooking, ensuring that teens have the basic skills they need to succeed in more advanced cooking classes. They’ll leave with newfound knowledge of how to handle food safely, basic cooking techniques, and the confidence to tackle recipes on their own.
